Does the Blue Picardy Shed?
Yes they do, however a good brushing 2 or 3 times a week will help. Grooming is fairly simple, we trim their feet and around their ears. As you can tell from the pictures of our dogs some have more coat then others.
How are they with children?
They are good around children, but having said that, we do not believe that young children should be left unsupervised with any dog regardless of the breed. Children must also be taught proper handling of dogs from a very early age.
What is the average size of a Blue Picardy?
Some of the descriptions of size on the internet are incorrect. Adult males are about 22-24 inches at the withers and weigh between 60-70 pounds. The females are slightly shorter and weigh between 50-60 pounds.
Do they get along with cats?
We think the question should be "do the cats get along with them"
We do not have cats here at Brighthope so our dogs and puppies do not know what a "cat" is, BUT, we have seen lots of pictures from our puppy families that show their Blue Picardy and their cat happily snoozing on the bed or sofa together.
What is the energy level , are they hyper, do they require exercise?
Quite often we asked to compare the Blue Picardy to other breeds that perspective owners might be researching. That is a hard question to answer as we have not owned those breeds before.
All dogs require exercise and we believe that free running is essential to their wellbeing. The Blue Picardy is a very intelligent animal therefore they do need stimulation. Our dogs have the benefit of running in "Picardy Park".
Getting a sporting dog means being prepared to provide adequate exercise and also being prepared to share the couch at the end
of the day .
If we buy a Brighthope Puppy, can we pick out the one we want?
As any breeder will tell you there are different levels of energy and different personalities within a litter of puppies of the same breed. Some want to be the center of attention, some are observers, some are little piggies when it comes to food, some want "all" the toys, while others always appear to be on a mission.
We start to see the differences in personalities around the 2 1/2 to 3 week age. As we get to know our puppy families we do our best to match up the right puppy for your lifestyle.
Blue Picardy puppies do have lots of energy and as with other sporting dog breeds they take a bit longer to mature.
Is the Blue Picardy reliable off leash?
If you take the time to properly train your dog the answer is yes. These dogs are very trainable and are eager to please. But having said that we adhere to the concept that a dog must earn the right to have privileges. First you must decide what is and is not acceptable behaviour for your dog, and train accordingly. The Blues respond very well to positive and consistent training methods. Dogs love to have a leader of the pack and--GUESS WHAT--that is you.
Can we breed the dog that we buy from Brighthope Kennels?
All our puppies are sold on Non-Breeding agreements that are registered with the Canadian Kennel Club. From time to time we may place puppies in homes where we make an arrangement to lease back an animal for breeding.
Do the Blues like the cold weather?
Blue Picardy Spaniels love the snow and take great delight in burrowing under it to find "whatever might be living there". In cases of extreme hot or cold we do monitor their outdoor time.
Is there a difference between field and show dogs?
The instinct for hunting is very evident in the Blue Picardy. Our dogs show us everyday what they were bred to do. We show our dogs in conformation and our show dogs show us how they "point" out in the field. Many of our puppies have gone to hunting families and are doing extremely well.
